Last year I wrote about the Watoto children’s choir attending Evangel Temple. This year they performed at Stone Church in downtown Toronto. They are as dynamic as ever. What a performance. That such happiness and optimism can develop from such adverse conditions is astounding—and uplifting. Watato still reigns, as does the Good Lord.
For those of you unfamiliar with Watoto (which means “children” in Swahili), it is a “holistic care program that was initiated as a response to the overwhelming number of orphaned and vulnerable children and women in Africa”. The organization takes in these beautiful souls in and provides medical, educational, and spiritual needs, among other things.
As the children so joyously sing: I am not forgotten, I am not forsaken. And they aren’t. With Watoto—and strong faith—they have a future.
If you have an opportunity to see them, do. You may just walk out with a tear on your cheek, a smile of joy on your lips, and hope in your heart.
